We’ll Have to Wait Until 2027 for Teyana Taylor’s Directorial Debut

Oscar nominee. Culinary student. Singer, songwriter, choreographer, dancer. The list goes on and on, but Teyana Taylor will soon add another bullet to her already-enviable resume: feature filmmaker. Paramount Pictures declared today that the “One Battle After Another” nominee’s first feature directorial outing will arrive in theaters on April 9, 2027.

The project, known as “Get Lite,” was first declared in 2024, with the news that “A Wrinkle in Time” and “Euphoria” actress Storm Reid would co-star in the upcoming film.

Based on today’s announcement, it appears that Taylor is still looking for a male lead for the film, which is officially billed as the story of “a talented, but sheltered, dance student [who] finds inspiration, love, and family in the last place he expected: the subways of New York City.”

The film will be produced by Kenya Barris, Anni Weisband (Khalabo Ink Society), Reid, Robyn Simpson (A Seed & Wings Productions), and Bill Karesh (OFFBRND), with Taylor also serving as executive producer.

The multi-talented Taylor has a long history of directing her own music videos via her all-female music production company The Aunties, launched in 2017. With “Get Lite,” she’s further tapping into her roots, embracing a story that recalls her time also working as a choreographer and dancer, dating back to the start of her music career in 2010.

In 2024, she further expounded on her creative desires in an interview with IndieWire. “I’m even in a space where I’m making sure the roles that I take are roles that are going to allow me to keep pushing my range and to continue to work toward being a better version of everything than I am,” she mentioned. “So, for me, I don’t want to take anything that’s too easy. I want to take on the challenge and further myself.”

Paramount today also declared dates for three other upcoming films on its slate: Jonathan Levine’s David Corenswet-starring “Untitled John Tuggle Film” (previously known as “Mr. Irrelevant”) is set for December 25, 2026; Potsy Ponciroli’s modern-day Western “The Rescue” will be released on January 29, 2027; and an untitled “Paramount Horror Event Film” will come out on July 16, 2027 (no other details, including director or cast, were shared).
